DIY Golden Candle Jar

As you may or may not know, I have a not so secret obsession with candles. Preferably the kind that smell ridiculously good. Which of course also leads to the issue of where to put them, and most importantly: where to put them to look pretty.
And this is where my DIY side makes an appearance:

DIY Golden Candle Jar holder mason jar

What do you need?

  • A mason jar, a decorative jar, a glass, basically anything that is transparent and you can envision a candle in
  • Gold paint that applies to glass
  • A brush

It really isn't difficult at all, and unlike the "dip your jar in paint" method which requires a certain kind of paint and a bowl that needs to be filled with said paint so that the jar can be dipped, here you just need a space to make a bit of a mess. Preferably outside as the paint has its fumes you will want to avoid in an indoor space.

How do you do it?

Just brush on as much or as little of the paint you want. I recommend letting it dry and adding coat after coat, as it will give a much better effect. Also, you might want to dab it on as opposed to regular brush strokes, it will give you a more vintage look. It's how I did it with this one.

Add a bow, add some rhinestones if you wish, add some glitter even and you're ready to light up a gorgeous candle in your pretty new candle jar!

Newest Candle Additions

There once was a day where I shockingly realized that the places that used to sell Yankee Candles had stopped selling them. A wave of despair, then another, and then one more came over me because I am a very big candle lover. Especially the kind that smell so exquisitely delicious.
But on a happy Wednesday evening I once again stumbled upon a place that sold them! Not too many, but enough for me to find some delicious smells to become happy.

I picked up these three, but I now am sure than in a few days, I'll be back for more. What is now burning next to my bed is Christmas Roses and it has such a comforting, clean floral smell! It's like I washed my laundry with pure roses. And that's just from this little wax tart. I actually find these tarts to be much more practical and they have a lot of burn time in them. But then again, I also love my huge candles than just burn so beautifully.
On the same Rose theme, I also picked up Fresh Cut Roses. Let the name remind you of what they smell like exactly. Roses. Fresh cut. Been wanting to try this one for a while, but didn't seem to find it anywhere, and as I so often do, before buying the bigger version, I like to test it out on small candles to be sure that my fantasy indeed smells like reality.

And since it's almost the season to be jolly, how does one resist Mandarin Cranberry ? It has a fruity but spicy smell, all while still staying very fresh scented. Imagine that delicious mandarin smell, but with a hint of cinnamon and the warmth of baked cranberries.
The most important thing with any fragrance for me is that it doesn't have an overpowering smell that will just make me so sick of it, that I never want to smell it again. Thus the love for this hint of freshness in every scent I pick up. So far, the best candle to have a fresh but delicious fragrance has been the MUJI Pomelo and Lychee one, that I could just smell for ages without tiring.

Really look forward to burning all of these up, because Yankee Candles really fill the air once you start the flame. One of these small candles can easily fill up a whole apartment in under 10 minutes with their scents and it's something I really love about their products.

Decorating With Washi Tape

Washi tape is one of my absolute favorite things. It is a tape made of a specific type of paper that comes from Japan. It is commonly made using fibers from the bark of the gampi tree and ever since a lovable genius put it in tape form I too can play with it! And how I like to do so!
It has been used to decorate most things I could find appropriate, but one of my favorites have been glass containers where candles were going to be placed.

I got mine at Paperchase, which is a familiar name for those of you living in the UK, but I have seen it at your regular craft or even office supply stores.

You have no idea how I love playing with these things and especially since they're sticky and you don't need extra aids in getting them to stay in the place you put them. What I know about myself is that if in front of a stand full with Washi tape, I might return home with a bag full of it because there's just so many patterns, colors and textures that you feel like a Pokemon master where you gotta have 'em all!

I feel like congratulations are in order since I managed to refrain myself from buying no more than these three, but you can use them in SO many ways!
Like I said, I like to pimp glass containers with them most, but you can use them for collages, you can use them for masking ( since it is a bit of a masking tape ), or even for organizing purposes. I mean, having a pretty tag like this makes it all a bit better.

Have you ever played around with washi tape? What did you do with it?

Muji Candles - My Two Favorites

I'm sure many of you are not familiar with Muji, much like I myself wasn't either until that one evening trip to Selfridges. When going out of the book department, I saw a pile of tin cases with the most perfect label on them. I soon realized they were candles and that they had combined some of my favorite things: Scented candle, great packaging and the cuteness of Asian products.

The fact that they only cost £ 3,50 is pretty incredible to me, and I would have gotten many more, just that, in my moment of vast inspiration, I had only flown to London with a backpack. You can imagine how little fits in there. That's why I ended up getting just two: Jasmine & Black Olive and Pomelo and Lychee.
Now, I just want to tell you, there was one called Log Fire and it was the exact and absolute smell of the one achieved during actual log fire. I think I might want that one for winter.
I'm happy I was able to resist because once I start sniffing candles I have an urge to buy them all and the only reason no Diptyque ones were purchased was because I was afraid they wouldn't survive the transportation.
If I'd live in London, my place would be an altar dedicated to gorgeous smells and an endless array of candles. So many options, love it!

But back to my candles

I think my color palette OCD also kicked in when it came to picking them because once I had fallen for Pomelo and Lychee I of course needed a second one.

Pomelo and Lychee is slightly sweet, tender, fruity and floral all at once. It smells a bit like blooming trees in spring, but a bit sweeter and fresher. I'll be honest and say pomelo and lychee both smell of nothing to me,or of very little, but the combination offered here is pure perfection. I'd call it the smell of well-being actually.

Jasmine & Black Olive  smells like what you'd expect it to: Jasmin. But it's not too overpowering, like most jasmin scented things tend to be. I think the "black olive" part tones it down and gives it a very subtle bitterness. Which for me is very welcome, as I'm not a fan of sweet smells anymore.

Of course, the favorite of the two is Pomelo and Lychee  simply because I'm into fresher smells but the next time I get to Selfridges, there will be a Muji haul.

And can I just ask: how great is the packaging? Simple and spot on. I love the combination of raw materials and metal with raw paper is just ideal to me. If someone would have added leather to this, I would have looked like that meme that goes "Take my money!"

You can find Muji candles at Selfridges or online On their Website as I have just noticed.

So, are you too fans of candles?

Pretty Photos: Candles

Pretty Photos time and that means I get to pick a pretty thing again.
What I picked today is another one of my obsessions: Candles
I like the light, I like the smells, I like the idea of them, I like the tranquility, I just like everything about candles, except for the part where you burn things when you're not paying attention.
But let me show you some pretty pictures featuring these beautiful things.

I know, quite a bit of Yankee Candles, but they smell so incredible!

How delicately gorgeous is this one? I would probably just sit next to it in awe for whoever created such a pretty thing.

I'd like to pick and choose from here, wouldn't you?

And here we have the epitome of perfection: Tea and Candles

And a last one.

Hope you liked looking at them as much as me, and next week there's some more pretties coming up. If you want to suggest a theme for Pretty Pictures, feel free!
